The South Korean data protection regulator has confirmed that the chatbot DeepSeek transmitted user information to the Chinese company ByteDance.
It has now been announced that the app's download in South Korea has been temporarily suspended.
We have confirmed DeepSeek's communication with ByteDance.
It is unknown what specific data was transmitted and in what volume.
The confirmation of a data leak via DeepSeek is the first case.
According to South Korean law, in order to transfer a user's personal data to a third party, their consent must be obtained.
The regulator also approached DeepSeek with a request regarding the methods of data collection and management of the service.
DeepSeek acknowledged deficiencies in consideration of local data protection laws and expressed a willingness to cooperate with the commission.
