Ukraine's Air Defense Crisis: Missile Shortages Ground Key Systems

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine is facing a critical shortage of air defense missiles, leaving some of its older anti-aircraft systems without ammunition and unable to perform combat missions. Anatolii Khrapchynskyi, a director of a defense enterprise, has stated that the country now depends on Western air defense models and urgently requires modernization and the production of new missiles. This reliance on foreign systems has become a strategic vulnerability for Ukraine's military.

The Ammunition Supply Challenge

The ammunition supply situation remains difficult. Although the EU approved an updated strategy for developing its defense-industrial complex in late 2024, the shortage of missiles for part of Ukraine's air defense arsenal persists. Some anti-aircraft missile systems in Ukraine are not receiving missiles, and Khrapchynskyi noted that some will likely never be resupplied.

"There are systems that stood without missiles for some time and later received them. But at the same time, complexes remain that are still without ammunition," - Anatolii Khrapchynskyi.

Compounding the problem, the production of missiles for some air defense systems has already ceased. This is a major concern, as "these systems are no longer manufactured in Europe," according to Khrapchynskyi. Therefore, the issue is not only about supplying missiles but also about the necessity to modernize or replace the complexes themselves. As of the morning of January 16, 2023, Ukraine lacked missiles for several air defense systems, highlighting the severity of the situation. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also remarked that

"the situation remains difficult,"
confirming the ongoing challenges in ensuring national security.

In the context of the ongoing conflict and increasing threats, the insufficient supply of ammunition for anti-aircraft missile systems could significantly impact Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Resolving this problem will require not only intensified cooperation with international partners to supply new models but also internal efforts to restore and modernize the national defense-industrial complex. The urgency of this situation is underscored by the absolute necessity of maintaining effective air defense against modern aerial threats, which are a constant feature of the war.
