Memorial Day for those killed in captivity - 'Azov' made a proposal.
The 'Azov' brigade called for July 28 to be established as Memorial Day for the defenders of Ukraine, participants of volunteer formations, and civilians who were executed, tortured, or died in captivity in the Russian Federation. It was on this day, three years ago, that the Russians carried out a mass execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Olenivka.
The 'Azov' brigade expressed the initiative to establish July 28 as Memorial Day for Ukrainian defenders who died in captivity at the hands of Russian enemies. One of the soldiers emphasized that this commemorative day should honor all those who fell victim to the cruelty and inhumanity of the enemy.
The commander noted that today Ukraine honors the memory of the fallen heroes, but prisoners of war remain a rarely mentioned category. He called to establish this day as a symbolic foundation to remind the world of Russia's cruelty, which disregards international law.
Recalling the tragic event that occurred three years ago in Olenivka, when Russia killed over 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war, the commander emphasized that over 90% of Ukrainian captives are subjected to torture. He called to establish July 28 as Memorial Day for Ukrainian prisoners of war to honor their memory and recognize their sacrifice.
The chosen date should remind of the horrific events in captivity and underscore the importance of honoring the memory of the fallen Ukrainian defenders and prisoners of war, so as not to forget their sacrifices.
