Defenders of Ukraine Day 2024: History of the Holiday, Greetings, and Cards.

On October 1, Ukrainians celebrate Defenders of Ukraine Day. This day is a Time when we honor those who protect our independence and sovereignty. Similar to the heroes of the past, such as World War II veterans and our Cossacks, we honor contemporary defenders who guard our borders from aggressors.

Today also marks the Feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks. The Intercession protects and defends us today. We ask the Blessed Virgin to grant peace to Ukraine and shield our borders from enemies.

By decree of President Petro Poroshenko, Defenders of Ukraine Day has been celebrated since 2014, following Russia's annexation of Crimea. This holiday is celebrated on the same date as the Orthodox holiday of the Intercession of the Theotokos - October 14.

In 2023, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church switched to the New Julian calendar, moving the celebration of the Intercession of the Theotokos to October 1. The dates for Defenders of Ukraine Day and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks were also changed by decree of the current President, Volodymyr Zelensky.
