Nine EU Nations Push to Cut IOC Funding Over Russia’s Olympic Reinstatement.
Joint Demand from Nine EU Member States
According to Espreso.tv: Nine countries within the European Union have called for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and international sports federations to lose access to EU budget funding. This move comes in response to the IOC’s decision to restore the Russian Olympic Committee’s activities. Estonia spearheaded the appeal, which was formally submitted to the European Commission. The following nations have joined the initiative:
- Denmark
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Netherlands
- Poland
- Romania
- Finland
- Sweden
The letter, directed to EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef, proposes excluding the IOC from the Erasmus+ program. Notably, the IOC Executive Board’s ruling on July 7, 2023, lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee—a suspension that had been in place since October 2023. Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee has criticized the IOC’s decision as both premature and unjustified. This situation underscores ongoing tensions between geopolitical conflicts and global sports governance.
Growing Concerns in International Sports
The stance taken by these nine EU countries reflects deepening unease over Russia’s involvement in international athletic events and the funding of organizations that enable its global sports presence. Their appeal highlights the intricate intersection of political issues and sports, especially as Russia’s reinstatement proceeds amid its ongoing military aggression. For many nations, particularly those supporting Ukraine, this has sparked outrage and could lead to further isolation of Russia within the sports community, potentially reshaping future international competitions.
