Breathing is Dangerous: 5 Tips During a Dust Storm in Ukraine.
In various cities of Ukraine, the air quality has deteriorated due to a dust storm that came from the Caspian region.
According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, severe atmospheric pollution is expected on October 1 and 2 in Kyiv and other regions.
In the cities of Poltava, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, residents report a dust cloud visible in the air since night. Videos appear on social networks showing that visibility in cities is worsening due to the dust.
According to Windy.com online service data, the dust cloud is moving from Central Asia - Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Weather observers note that the dust will reach Ukraine in waves, meaning periods of improvement will alternate with periods of deteriorating visibility and air quality.
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center predicts that such a situation will continue at least until Friday, when the wind in Ukraine will change direction to the south and west. During October 1 and 2, the dust will reach the territory of Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions, but its amount will be less. However, in these regions, air quality may further deteriorate due to the spread of carbon monoxide with smoke, which will spread from the northeastern borders of Ukraine on October 1.
The Ministry of Health of Ukraine reminds of the importance of protecting oneself from polluted air and recommends adhering to the following measures:
- Limit Time spent outdoors
- Close windows indoors
- Clean with wet methods more often
- Drink more water
- Use a respirator if possible
- Avoid active outdoor sports
The Ministry also emphasizes the importance of using verified information, particularly following updates on the official pages of regional Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It is worth noting that this is not the first case of a dust storm in Ukraine in 2024. In April, a dust cloud from the Sahara desert covered a significant part of Europe, including Ukraine. After the rain, a 'rusty' trace remained on cars, plant leaves, and windows.
