Conflict of Realities: Frederiksen and Trump
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation regarding the issue of Greenland joining the US. Frederiksen stated that Greenland is not for sale, but Trump disagreed.
This conversation opened a conflict not only of interests but also of realities. Frederiksen lives in a world of rules and agreements where compliance with norms is expected. Trump perceives the world as a realm of power politics, where strong rulers can do whatever they want.
Trump does not view laws and rules as constraints on his actions. He sees the world as a game with winners and losers. This was evident even in his refusal to accept defeat in the elections and relinquish power. He is also attempting to undermine the fundamental principles of American citizenship.
In order to achieve their goals, countries like Denmark need to speak to Trump in the language of power. They must reduce their dependence on the US and increase the cost of Trump's unacceptable behavior. Deploying troops and rallying allies may cause the White House to think twice before utilizing force.
Additionally, the political scientist notes that countries need to respond to tariffs and other trade measures imposed by the US president.
