Ukraine Axes Blood Donor Benefits: Who Loses Sick Leave and Bonuses.
Revised Regulations for Blood Donors in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: As of 2023, Ukraine introduced new rules for blood donors that have eliminated certain benefits. Specifically, paid sick leave for donors and monthly supplements for honorary donors are no longer available. These legislative changes have removed financial guarantees that previously compensated individuals for their socially valuable contributions. This marks a significant shift in how the country supports its blood donor community.
Benefit Cuts Take Effect
The removal of sick leave benefits—which previously covered 100% of average wages—went into effect on January 26, 2026. To qualify for such leave, donors had to complete:
- two blood donations,
- four plasma donations,
- two platelet donations via apheresis.
These conditions no longer grant access to paid sick leave.
Regarding Honorary Donors—a status awarded after donating 40 units of blood, 60 units of plasma, or 40 cell donations via apheresis—they previously received a monthly pension supplement equal to 10% of the subsistence minimum. Under the new regulations, these supplements are no longer granted. However, if a pension supplement was already assigned before January 25, 2026, it will continue to be paid.
As a result, the updated rules have substantially altered the social support framework for donors in Ukraine, reducing the range of benefits and financial incentives they once enjoyed.
These changes may raise concerns among potential donors, as the reduction in social guarantees could dampen motivation and willingness to donate blood. The elimination of benefits also calls into question the country's commitment to fostering donation as a critical social initiative, potentially jeopardizing the supply of blood components needed by medical facilities.
