Russia's Oil Refining Capacity Cut by 20% Due to Ukraine's Strikes, Says Former WTO Chief Pascal Lamy.
Pascal Lamy Weighs In on Attacks Against Russian Oil Refineries
According to Espreso.tv: Pascal Lamy, the former Director-General of the World Trade Organization, has assessed how strikes on Russian oil refining infrastructure are affecting both Moscow's military capabilities and civilian life. According to Lamy, Ukraine has reduced Russia's ability to process crude oil by approximately 20%. This figure highlights the significant disruption that military operations have caused to Russia's energy infrastructure.
Recent Ukrainian Military Operations
In a series of recent actions by Ukrainian forces, a missile strike known as 'Flamingo' hit an artillery systems plant in Volgograd on June 27. That same day, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) targeted a critical fuel supply station serving Moscow. By June 28, SBU's 'Alpha' unit had struck two separate oil refineries within Russia and also attacked a railway bridge in occupied Crimea.
On July 2, units from Ukraine's Defense Forces launched further strikes against Russian military and military-economic infrastructure. These operations reflect a renewed offensive push by Kyiv in response to ongoing threats from the Russian Federation. As Pascal Lamy stated,
“Ukraine's ability to strike oil refineries inside the Russian Federation has damaged 20% of that capacity”— a remark that underscores the strategic role of hitting energy assets in modern warfare.
Attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure not only degrade its warfighting potential but also carry serious risks for the civilian population. The reported reduction in Ukraine's capacity to target these critical sites may signal tactical shifts on both sides. As fighting intensifies, it is crucial to monitor how these developments reshape the regional landscape and what steps might be taken to protect non-combatants.
