Assessing the Damage to the Druzhba Pipeline

According to UATV: A team of European Union experts landed in Ukraine on March 19, 2023, tasked with evaluating the condition of the Druzhba oil pipeline. The pipeline had been damaged during a Russian attack on January 27, 2023, which halted crude oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia, creating a serious energy security crisis for the region.

In response to the disruption, Hungary began blocking a €90 billion EU loan intended for Ukraine. On March 12, 2023, the European Commission proposed sending a fact-finding mission to Ukraine to inspect the pipeline, underscoring the urgency and importance of assessing the damage. The Druzhba pipeline is a critical piece of energy infrastructure for several European nations.

Briefing and International Support

On March 14, 2023, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the Naftogaz group, held a briefing for foreign diplomats to discuss the pipeline's status. Ukraine’s Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported that the attack had caused internal equipment damage due to burning oil. The European Union has also offered technical support and funding to help restore the pipeline’s operations, highlighting international efforts to address Ukraine’s energy challenges.

This situation underscores how vital the Druzhba pipeline is for the energy security of not only Ukraine but also neighboring countries like Hungary and Slovakia. The outcome of the damage assessment and any subsequent repairs could significantly impact regional energy stability, as well as Ukraine’s relationship with the European Union—especially regarding financial aid and energy cooperation.
