Hungary Left Without a President as Parliament Passes Constitutional Amendment.
Removal of Hungary's President
According to Espreso.tv: On July 13, 2023, the Hungarian parliament passed a constitutional amendment that led to the removal of President Tamás Sulyok. Alongside Sulyok, the head of the Constitutional Court, Péter Polt, also lost his position. The amendment was approved with 139 votes in favor and only 6 against.
The initiative for this change came from Prime Minister Péter Magyar's party, 'Tisza'. In a statement, Tamás Sulyok remarked:
'I am fulfilling my duty in accordance with the Fundamental Law—after carefully considering my legal options and my conscience. My signature is the final confirmation of my responsibilities as President of the Republic and of my complete and all-encompassing respect for the institution of the Presidency.' Tamás Sulyok
Prime Minister Péter Magyar commented on the situation, stating that 'every time he had to choose between constitutional principles and the interests of Fidesz, Tamás Sulyok repeatedly chose the interests of Fidesz, and he continues to do so!' These events have sparked significant public and political debate in Hungary, reflecting shifts in the country's political landscape.
Potential Implications for the Political Situation
The removal of both the president and the head of the Constitutional Court signals possible changes in Hungary's balance of power, which could shape the country's future political trajectory. The actions of the 'Tisza' party and Prime Minister Magyar, who spearheaded these changes, may indicate a drive toward greater concentration of authority and control over key institutions—a development that has raised concerns among the public and international observers.
