EU Pledges Over €50 Million to Armenia Amid Russian Economic Coercion.
European Union Unveils Financial Package for Armenia
According to UATV: In response to mounting economic pressure from Moscow, the European Union is stepping up to support Armenia with a financial aid package exceeding €50 million. This initiative is part of Brussels' broader strategy to bolster Yerevan as it faces trade restrictions and other coercive measures imposed by Russia.
The decision follows a phone conversation between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the European Commission, stated that von der Leyen made it unequivocally clear that Russia's recent restrictions against Armenia amount to economic blackmail and are completely unacceptable.
'Expanding export limitations on Armenian goods is a clear case of weaponizing economic ties for political leverage.' Olof Gill, European Commission spokesperson
Gill added that Europe "knows this tactic all too well" and therefore "stands firmly with Armenia." As part of the EU's broader support package, the financial assistance is designed to enhance the country's resilience and foster economic growth.
Direct Budget Support for Yerevan
Guillaume Mercier, the European Commission's spokesperson for enlargement, confirmed that this constitutes "direct budget support," meaning the funds will go straight to Armenian institutions. He emphasized that the aid is aligned with the EU's plan to strengthen Armenia's economic stability and development.
By extending this financial lifeline, the European Union underscores its commitment to standing by partners in challenging times, ensuring regional economic stability and growth. This move also sends a powerful signal to other nations facing pressure from larger powers, showcasing the EU's readiness to push back against economic threats and support those under duress.
