European Commission’s Autonomous Trade Measures

According to Espreso.tv: In a move to counter Moscow’s economic leverage over Yerevan, the European Commission is preparing a package of autonomous trade measures. These are designed to reduce or eliminate tariffs on Armenian agricultural and food exports to EU member states. The initiative comes as Russia continues to apply economic pressure on Armenia, threatening its trade stability.

Armenia’s total annual exports to the EU are valued at roughly €420 million. To bolster the country’s economy, the EU has also proposed an initial support package of €50 million. The measures are expected to help Armenian businesses access the European market and sustain industries hardest hit by Russian restrictions.

European Union Support

Olof Gill, a European Commission spokesperson, stated: 'The autonomous trade measures are intended to help more Armenian companies enter the EU market and support sectors most affected by Russian limitations.'

These initiatives are part of a broader EU effort to deepen ties with Armenia. Later next month, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos is scheduled to visit Armenia, underscoring the importance of EU-Armenia cooperation amid current challenges. 'Now is the time to step up our support for Armenia and show that the European Union can be a reliable partner,' a Financial Times source noted.

The proposed measures could mark a significant step in strengthening economic links between Armenia and the EU. They also reaffirm the EU’s commitment to backing nations facing economic hardship. Given the geopolitical landscape, such initiatives may help Armenia reduce its reliance on Russia and unlock new growth opportunities within the European market.
