EU may cancel the veto power for countries: how it will affect support for Ukraine

According to FREEДOM:

The EU is considering new foreign policy rules

The European Union plans to change its decision-making approaches in foreign policy, as the current requirements for unity often stand in the way. This is especially noticeable due to Hungary's position, which has repeatedly blocked key decisions in support of Ukraine. In Brussels, options to bypass Budapest's veto are already being discussed, including the possibility of switching to a qualified majority system. This was mentioned by the president of the analytical center “Politka”, Oleg Lysnyy, in an interview on the FREEДOM channel on September 1.

Expert comments

'I must say that this is actually not only a positive step for us but also for the European Union. Because Hungary has always, or for a significant part of the time, put obstacles not only for Ukraine but also for many decisions of the EU itself. We know perfectly well that there are flagships and there are outsiders, such as Hungary. It seems to me that most countries, tired of Orban's pressure, will strive for a solution that will launch a new method of working with the leaders of the countries,' he noted.

According to Oleg Lysnyy, this decision has long been necessary, but it is important for the EU to implement it quickly.

'This decision needs to be made as soon as possible because the European Union will expand, and hypothetically some other politician similar to Orban may emerge, making it difficult for the European Union to function. Therefore, this needs to be done yesterday, but better late than never. The European Union is well aware that if this [decision] is postponed for the next years, supporters of Orban's behavior will emerge, and they will also blackmail the European Union and try to resolve their personal interests,' the analyst emphasized.

The current situation at the meeting in Copenhagen

Let us recall that at an informal meeting in Copenhagen (Denmark), the foreign and defense ministers of EU countries discussed defense issues, military investments, and security guarantees for Ukraine. Questions about the 19th package of sanctions against Russia and reparations — how to obtain compensation from the Kremlin for the damage and destruction caused by the war against Ukraine — were also raised.

Considering new rules in the EU's foreign policy that will simplify communication and decision-making could significantly impact the stability of the Union amid escalating international challenges. Ahead of the EU's expansion, resolving the veto issue will become critically important for the evolution of the community's political system.
