The EU discusses an army of 100,000 soldiers: how Sweden and Spain are strengthening defense.
Discussion on the creation of a European army
According to UATV: The European Union is discussing the possibility of creating joint armed forces and a Security Council, according to European Commissioner Andrius Kubilius. He noted that the EU needs an army of 100,000 soldiers. This discussion has become particularly relevant in light of serious threats facing Europe, especially from Russia.
Sweden is actively strengthening its defense capabilities. The country's plans include investments in developing air defense that will exceed 1.5 billion dollars. It is expected that by 2026, Sweden's defense budget will reach 2.8% of its gross domestic product (GDP). Sweden is also one of the main supporters of Ukraine in its fight for independence.
Spain is also joining the initiative to create a European army. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated on January 10, 2023, the need to implement this idea. According to surveys, 70% of citizens of EU countries support the concept of a European army.
Key issues of defense industry integration
In the context of these discussions, financial support and integration of the defense industry have become key issues. Albares emphasized the importance of integrating the defense industry to ensure its own means of deterrence. At the same time, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte noted:
'We need to be honest. The dangers we face are real and long-term.' - Mark Rutte
Thus, the creation of a European army and strengthening the defense of EU member states becomes a priority in the face of modern challenges facing Europe.
The discussion of creating joint armed forces of the EU reflects growing concerns about security in the region amid geopolitical tensions. Investments from Sweden and other countries indicate Europe’s readiness to adapt to new threats, highlighting the importance of collective defense. The support for a European army from citizens of EU countries also indicates a growing awareness of the need for joint efforts in ensuring stability and security in Europe.
