Visit of European Leaders to Moldova
Today, August 27, in Chisinau, on the occasion of Moldova's Independence Day, the President of France Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, and Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk visited. They met with the President of the country Maia Sandu, reaffirming their support for Moldova's pro-European course.
Euro-Integration as the Choice of the People
The Prime Minister of Poland pointed out that Chisinau's euro-integration is a conscious choice of the citizens of a democratic country. The French President added that Moldova's path to the EU is a path to stability and security.
“While several hundred kilometers from your capital, an aggressive war initiated by Russia against Ukraine continues, it is important to remember that for Moldova, European integration is an unequivocal choice in favor of peace and law. Kremlin propaganda claims that Europeans want to prolong the war and that the European Union oppresses the people. This is a lie. Unlike Russia, the European Union does not threaten anyone and respects the sovereignty of every individual. It is a union where everyone decides to join freely, sovereignly, and where the sovereignty of all is respected. It is a union of prosperity and peace,” emphasized Emmanuel Macron.
Greetings from Zelensky
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also congratulated Moldova on Independence Day, emphasizing the importance of close partnership between the two countries.
“We highly value the close cooperation between our countries. The countries of our region are closely interconnected, and together we must defend our peoples, our states, and our independence. This is what we are doing. And we remember: only together, in a united Europe, can we ensure reliable security and a dignified life for all our people,” wrote the President of Ukraine on social media.
Threat from Russia
President Maia Sandu stated that Russia is preparing an “unprecedented interference” in the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28, aimed at establishing control over Moldova.
This visit is an important reaffirmation of European support for Moldova amid growing threats from Russia. Western leaders emphasized the importance of euro-integration for the stability and development of the region, which will undoubtedly have a significant impact on future political events in the country.
