Four Chinese Firms Face Potential EU Sanctions in New Crackdown.
EU Moves to Tighten Restrictions on Chinese Companies
According to Espreso.tv: The European Union is preparing to impose new sanctions on Chinese companies suspected of aiding Russia's military operations. Foreign ministers from EU member states are set to discuss these additional measures on June 15 in Luxembourg. Under this latest sanctions package, four Chinese enterprises could be targeted, highlighting the bloc's deepening concern over Beijing's potential role in the Ukraine conflict.
These penalties will form part of a separate interim sanctions package, as work on the 21th round of EU sanctions continues. David O'Sullivan, the EU's Special Envoy for Sanctions, has described China as a 'very big problem' for the bloc's sanctions regime against Russia, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the urgent need to monitor economic ties with the country.
EU Trade Commissioner Set to Meet Chinese Counterpart
Separately, a meeting is scheduled between EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Chinese representative Li Chenggang on the sidelines of the OECD ministerial conference in Paris. This dialogue could prove pivotal in shaping future trade relations and sanctions policy between the European Union and China. Amid ongoing developments, the EU continues to seek effective responses to challenges posed by Russian aggression and potential Chinese involvement in these dynamics.
This expansion of sanctions against Chinese firms reflects growing tensions in EU-China relations against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. The move could significantly impact economic links and political ties between the two sides, as the EU aims to curb any support China might provide to Russia. The upcoming meeting between the EU commissioner and the Chinese representative will also be crucial in defining the bloc's next steps in this context.
