European Commission to accelerate the abandonment of Russian gas: what will change.
European Commission accelerates the abandonment of Russian gas
According to inkorr.com: The European Commission hopes that thanks to new sources of liquefied natural gas supply, the European Union will be able to abandon imports of this type of fuel from Russia faster than previously planned.
This was stated by the spokesperson for the European Commission, Anna Kaisa Itkonen, during a press briefing in Brussels.
Itkonen noted that the initial assessments were made based on data available at the beginning of the year when the European Commission had to 'remain quite realistic and give market operators the necessary time to find alternatives.'
She also emphasized: 'In the coming months, new sources of LNG will appear on the market, and it will be supplied better. Thus, we can make this offer right now.'
The spokesperson clearly outlined the difference between sanctions and the RePower Europe initiative, which involves a gradual abandonment of Russian fuel.
'RePower Europe proposes a permanent ban on the import of Russian gas — both pipeline and liquefied. For security reasons of supply, it has no time frames, and it also covers oil,' Itkonen added.
In contrast, the new proposal announced last week only concerns liquefied gas, making it more specific within the overall strategy of energy independence from Russia.
The accelerated cessation of Russian LNG imports will be an important step toward reducing the EU's energy dependency on the aggressor and enhancing the energy security of European states.
Thus, the message from the European Commission indicates that new sources of liquefied natural gas supply will allow the EU to abandon imports of this type of fuel from Russia more quickly. This step is strategically important for reducing energy dependence on the Russian Federation and enhancing the security of energy resource supplies in European countries.
