According to UATV: The European Union is set to develop a new security and defense strategy, with a deadline for completion by July 2026. This initiative underscores the EU's commitment to a more robust collective defense posture. Within this framework, Ukraine has already received substantial financial backing, totaling €193 billion since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, highlighting the EU's strategic partnership with Kyiv in the face of ongoing aggression.

The SAFE Program and Defense Funding

As part of its broader security efforts, the EU adopted the SAFE program in 2025. Nineteen participating nations have already requested over €150 billion from this initiative to meet their national defense requirements. In response, the European Commission has approved funding for eight EU member states amounting to €38 billion. The countries set to receive this funding include:

• Denmark, which requested over €46 million;
• Cyprus and Spain, each seeking around €1 billion;
• Belgium, with requests exceeding €8 billion;
• Romania, asking for over €16.5 billion.

EU leadership has stressed the urgency of decisive action in this domain.

“There is no time to wait! Following a detailed analysis, the European Commission has approved the national SAFE plans of eight EU member states for €38 billion in funding,” stated Andrius Kubilius.

“is working on key areas that define our independence. These are security and defense.”

Despite Russia's continued aggression, the pursuit of peace negotiations remains a focus. Von der Leyen expressed confidence that “now is the time to show our support.” Concurrently, Baiba Braže emphasized that “as long as Russia does not change its behavior, there is no basis for negotiations.” This demonstrates that EU security strategy and support for Ukraine remain top priorities amidst current geopolitical challenges.
