According to The Sun: A kindergarten teacher has been found guilty of the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl, the daughter of her boyfriend, following a conflict related to suspicions of infidelity.
Amber Lee Hughes, 29, was sentenced on Thursday at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg for the murder of Nadia-Jane Chaliita.

NewsflashThe girl, who was found raped and drowned in the bathtub, was discovered in her home in Glenvista in January 2023.
Hughes, who was in a relationship with the child's father, Eli Chaliita, was left alone with the girl while he went for an interview.
According to the prosecution, she seized this moment to take revenge following a serious argument.
Hughes was extremely upset as he left without a goodbye kiss and she suspected him of infidelity.
“You broke my heart; I will destroy yours. How could you do this?”
The lifeless body of Nadia-Jane was found in the bathtub, and an autopsy confirmed that before her death she had been raped twice.
Hughes has always denied the rape, but Judge Richard Mkhabela stated that the evidence indicated she attacked the child at least once within 12 hours of her death when she was the only adult in the house.
According to the judge, Hughes's actions were “obviously premeditated.”
“The accused made a threat. She has a propensity for violent threats.”
The judge added that the horrific threats she sent Chaliita minutes before the murder indicate her intentions.
“You broke my heart; I will destroy yours.”
The judge summarized: “It is impossible not to conclude that [Hughes] carried out this threat.”
During the trial, Hughes changed her position from an initial denial of guilt to admitting she killed Nadia-Jane by sitting on her in the bathtub.
“I acknowledge that I left her in the bathtub while the water was still running,” she stated in court.
After the murder, Hughes allegedly claimed that she attempted suicide three times.
She also expressed that she suffers from borderline personality disorder, but acknowledged that she was aware of her actions.
Hughes began dating Chaliita in 2021 and later moved in with him and his daughter.
Prosecutors noted that the couple's relationship was tense, with frequent arguments during which she repeatedly threatened to inflict harm on the child.
“The entire incident was provoked by a quarrel over his infidelity.”
Hughes, despite denying the accusation of sexual violence, did not allow free access to the case.
Newsflash
Nadia-Jane knew her murderer for almost all her life. NewsflashAfter the verdict was announced, devastated father Eli Chaliita said he felt relief at the conclusion of a case that had dragged on for two months.
The hearing was postponed when Hughes suddenly changed her testimony from innocence to admission of guilt in July, just a few days before the hearing concluded.
“Thank God, we made progress today,” he said.
While he was satisfied with the verdict, Chaliita acknowledged that he was disappointed that Hughes was only convicted of one of two rapes, calling it “two-thirds closure.”
“It won’t bring my child back. Nothing will bring her back. So this feeling is mixed: of anger and relief. It’s just mixed emotions,” he added.
When asked if he expected Hughes to receive a life sentence, Chaliita replied that no sentence could compensate for the loss.
“Obviously, I am the child’s father. The justice I seek does not exist in this world or in this life.”
Hughes's lawyer requested a postponement of sentencing to give the defense more time to prepare. The court granted this request, scheduling a hearing for October 27.
Earlier during the hearings, Chaliita testified that Hughes was jealous of his younger daughter.
“She was jealous that I paid more attention to Nadia-Jane and spent more money on her,” he said.
The bitter father added: “I felt my heart dropping from my chest; I felt something very wrong.”
