EU Commissioner Urges €90 Billion in Arms for Ukraine to Strengthen Defenses.
War in Ukraine and EU Support Efforts
According to UATV: Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine could potentially expand into EU and NATO territories, warns Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defense and Space. He has called for bolstering Ukraine’s military capabilities by purchasing weapons from EU stockpiles. As Kubilius stated,
“Strengthening Ukraine’s defense capacity remains a key factor for the security of all of Europe.”
As part of this support, Ukraine may receive a €90 billion credit package, with €60 billion allocated specifically for acquiring ready-to-use weaponry. This initiative highlights the EU’s strategic focus on immediate military aid to counter Russian aggression.
Ukraine’s Priorities and Situation Assessment
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that air defense is the nation’s top priority. He declared:
“It is crucial now and in the future to convey to all political leaders that air defense for Ukraine is priority number one.”These statements underscore the rapidly growing need to enhance Ukraine's military strength amid ongoing threats from Russia.
Experts note that Russia currently lacks the capability to launch a large-scale offensive against NATO. Radosław Sikorski stressed:
“Today, Russia is not able to conduct a major offensive against NATO, and if they were preparing for it, we would know.”Meanwhile, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas observed that if Russia declares mobilization, it would only confirm their inability to win the war.
The situation in and around Ukraine remains tense, with the international community—especially EU nations—continuing to explore ways to support Ukraine in its fight for independence and territorial integrity.
EU backing, particularly in defense, could significantly impact Ukraine’s ability to counter external threats and preserve its sovereignty under challenging conditions. At the same time, calls for action from European leaders reflect a recognition that regional stability is vital for the security of all Europe.
