EU Commission Proposes Sanctions Against Patriarch Kirill in New Package Expected by Late July.
EU Commission's Sanctions List
According to Espreso.tv: The European Commission has recommended adding Russian Patriarch Kirill to its sanctions list due to his backing of the war in Ukraine. This proposal is part of a new sanctions package submitted on June 9, with approval anticipated before the end of July.
Patriarch Kirill is suspected of justifying war crimes committed by the Russian Federation. Specifically, he is accused of violating Ukraine's territorial integrity under Article 110, Part 3 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, as well as waging an aggressive war under Article 437, Part 2 of the same code. In 2023, Ukraine's Security Service placed Kirill—whose real name is Vladimir Gundyayev—on a wanted list.
Response from Religious Leaders
Among all Bulgarian metropolitans, only Naum of Ruse has issued an official stance on these developments. Additionally, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew condemned the attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv on June 15. These events highlight the growing pressure on religious institutions and their leaders in the context of the war in Ukraine.
The European Commission's proposal to sanction Patriarch Kirill reflects a global response to Russia's actions in Ukraine, particularly efforts to legitimize aggression through religious bodies. It also underscores the role of religious leaders in political processes and their influence on public opinion. As the war in Ukraine remains a pressing issue, the international community's reaction to the religious dimensions of the conflict could have far-reaching implications for interfaith relations in the region and beyond.
