Trump's Return Sparks Record Surge in European Arms Imports from the US.
How the ReArm Europe Strategy Is Reshaping US Weapons Exports
According to Слово і Діло — Інфографіка: European nations have dramatically increased their purchases of American weaponry, with import levels hitting new highs following Donald Trump's return to the White House. This trend comes as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled the ReArm Europe initiative in March 2025, a plan designed to bolster the continent's defense capabilities in response to growing security threats.
According to data from SIPRI, total US arms exports in 2021 stood at 11,601 million units, with European NATO allies accounting for 23.4% of that figure. The United Kingdom was the top buyer that year, purchasing 868 million units worth of weapons. By 2022, the European NATO share rose to 24.6%, as overall US exports climbed to 14,505 million units.
After a dip in 2023, when US arms exports fell to 10,920 million units, the numbers rebounded in 2024 to 13,651 million units. In 2025, Europe's share of US arms exports surged to 35.7%, with total exports reaching 13,980 million units. Poland alone received 968 million units worth of American weaponry that year.
Defense Initiatives Take Center Stage
These figures highlight Europe's growing appetite for American arms, fueled by strategic EU initiatives and shifting geopolitical dynamics. Facing ongoing armed conflicts and security threats, European states are racing to strengthen their defensive postures—a move that is directly reflected in their rising imports from the United States.
