Deadly Heatwave Grips Europe: 18 Die in France Within 24 Hours.
Extreme Heat Wave Sweeps Across Europe
According to Novyny.live: A severe heatwave is battering Europe, with France reporting at least 18 fatalities in a single day. These record-breaking temperatures are putting immense strain on infrastructure and public health systems across the continent.
On June 22, the scorching conditions claimed 18 lives in France, including two children aged 2 and 4 who died inside a vehicle in the city of Carpentras. Additionally, three elderly individuals between 80 and 95 years old succumbed to complications from chronic illnesses in the Bordeaux region.
Temperature Records and Widespread Impacts
Meteorologists have recorded unprecedented temperatures in multiple French cities. Bordeaux hit 41.9°C, Poitiers reached 41.2°C, and Paris saw the mercury climb to 38.4°C. Just across the border in San Sebastián, temperatures neared 40°C. Between June 21 and 22, France also reported 13 drowning incidents linked to the heatwave.
The extreme weather is not confined to France. The UK's National Meteorological Office has issued a heatwave warning, with forecasts predicting temperatures could exceed 39°C. Italy has declared a red alert in 12 cities, signaling serious health risks. In Turin, energy companies have implemented double shifts for workers due to surging demand on the power grid.
Animals are also suffering. In the Belgian city of Templeuve, an animal shelter took in 150 birds over just three days, highlighting the severe toll the heat is taking on wildlife.
This European heatwave is a stark reminder of the global climate crisis and its devastating effects on human health and ecosystems.
In the face of such extreme weather events, nations must urgently implement measures to protect their citizens, from upgrading infrastructure to raising public awareness about heat-related dangers. These incidents underscore the critical need for international cooperation to tackle climate change and mitigate its consequences.
