The European Parliament rejected the consideration of the petition regarding the Finnish-Russian border.
The European Parliament closed the petition from Finland and the public organization 'Olexandriyske Society' about opening the border with Russia, confirmed the head of the communications department of the EU's top executive body Alessio Incorvaia. The decision was made in light of the assessment from the European Commission.
According to the document, Finland has the right to close points on the border with Russia to ensure national security and public order under the Schengen Code. This may negatively affect EU citizens' rights to free movement, but is justified by the situation and security issues, noted representatives of the European Commission.
Due to the large number of undocumented asylum seekers, Finland closed land points on the border with Russia in November 2023. Additionally, to prevent illegal migration, the country built a 35 km long fence. This action was prompted by a planned increase of smuggling across the border initiated by Russia.
The European Parliament rejected the petition from Finland to open the border with Russia due to the situation of illegal migration and the increase in smuggling. The decision was made in consideration of ensuring national security and public order within the framework of the European Union.
