Focus on Conventional Forces First, EU Urged by Defense Commissioner Kubilius.
Statement from the EU's Defense Commissioner
According to UATV: Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defense and Space, argued that the European Union should prioritize developing conventional weapons before bolstering its nuclear capabilities. He delivered this message on June 8, 2023, during an informal gathering of EU defense ministers held in Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus.
Kubilius stressed the need to heed calls from transatlantic allies, who are urging European nations to assume greater responsibility for their own conventional defense.
“We are still taking into account the statements from our transatlantic partners, who are asking us Europeans to take primary responsibility for conventional defense” - Andrius Kubilius.
The Significance of Traditional Defense
The commissioner believes that if EU countries can enhance their conventional defense capabilities, it will positively impact their ability to address nuclear defense matters.
“So, if we were to master this in the area of conventional defense, I think we would be much better and more successful in matters of pan-European nuclear defense” - Andrius Kubilius.
By placing emphasis on conventional weaponry, the European Union could strengthen its overall defense posture in the face of modern challenges. This approach underscores the critical role of non-nuclear forces in ensuring Europe's security and maintaining strong ties with transatlantic partners.
Kubilius's stance highlights the importance of conventional defense within the broader context of European security and relationships with transatlantic allies. Amid global instability and rising military threats, EU nations can significantly bolster their defense capabilities through effective use of conventional arms. Success in this area could also pave the way for greater integration among European states on nuclear security issues, a vital step for the region's collective defense.
