Russia's Relentless Assault on Ukraine's Ports

According to Espreso.tv: Volodymyr Pavlichenko, Ukraine's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, has stressed that Kyiv is acting in self‑defense and does not target Russian grain. He pointed out that since the full‑scale invasion began, at least 1,054 port infrastructure sites have been damaged or partially destroyed. Those strikes have also harmed 232 civilian vessels and killed or wounded 307 civilians.

In June and July 2023 alone, Pavlichenko noted, Russian attacks hit nearly 50 cargo ships, killing more than 30 people. Maritime exports to Ukrainian ports came to a halt on July 22, 2023, because of the ongoing assault, severely disrupting the country's agricultural sector. More than 90 percent of Ukraine's farm exports normally travel through Black Sea ports.

Pavlichenko underscored that

“nobody attacks Russian grain, strikes Russian commercial vessels, or destroys Russian grain terminals”

and said that

“Ukraine exercises its right to self‑defense.”

When Ukraine hits military airfields, bases, ammunition depots, and fuel sites that support Russian operations, the war “simply returns to where it started.” In contrast, he added, “Russia attacks Ukrainian ports, grain terminals, and commercial ships.” These facts illustrate the conflict's intensification and the severe toll on civilians and Ukraine's economy.

The strikes on Ukrainian ports and civilian vessels, as described by Pavlichenko, pose a grave challenge because maritime hubs are vital to the nation's agricultural exports.
