Leader of the French right-wing party 'National Rally' Marine Le Pen received a prison sentence

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right French party 'National Rally', was sentenced to four years in prison, with two years suspended. She also has the option to serve the remainder of her sentence under house arrest with an electronic bracelet. This is reported by Le Monde.

Additionally, Marine Le Pen has been fined 100,000 euros. She is also banned from running for public office for five years, and this decision takes effect immediately.

Admission of guilt in embezzlement

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French far-right, was found guilty of embezzling 2.9 million euros of funds allocated by the European Parliament. These funds were intended to pay for the assistants of MEPs, but Le Pen's political force used them for their party staff.

Misappropriation of European Parliament funds

Among those guilty in the case of misappropriation of European Parliament funds were also eight MEPs and 12 assistant MEPs. Moreover, the party was fined 2 million euros.

According to the prosecution, from 2004 to 2016, the party leadership (then called 'National Front') siphoned off over 3 million euros from European Parliament funds by hiring fictitious assistants.

Le Pen's political position

Marine Le Pen has run for the presidency of France three times: in 2012, 2017, and 2022. She is a strong supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Le Pen has repeatedly praised the Russian dictator, calling him 'someone who restores a sense of pride to a great nation.'

She has also stated that if she wins the presidential elections, France might recognize the annexation of Crimea. The 'National Front' received funding from the Kremlin, as French banks refused to provide financial aid due to the party's racist and anti-Semitic history. Le Pen found financing from Russian banks, including a bank with ties to the Kremlin.
