What the New Military Deferral Guarantees Mean

According to Novyny.live: On June 13, 2023, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced updated deferral guarantees for soldiers who served under contract. These benefits are now tied to the type of contract, length of service, and combat involvement, aiming to create a fairer system for those liable for military duty. This announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to improve conditions for service members during Ukraine’s prolonged conflict.

Under the new calculation methods for deferrals:

• A 14-month contract entitles a soldier who spent four months in combat to an 18-month deferral.
• A 10-month contract provides a deferral of three years and seven months for a soldier who has been serving since 2021.

These changes are designed to make military service more predictable and equitable.

In addition, all contract soldiers are guaranteed a six-month leave after completing their service.

“Those who have defended the country longer should get more time to recover after their service ends,” Fedorov stated. It is also noteworthy that conscripts under the age of 23 are permitted to leave Ukraine even during martial law. These initiatives could significantly improve service conditions for contract soldiers and their attitude toward fulfilling their military duty.
