Proposals for strengthening Ukraine's security must be specific - Bratchuk

According to FREEДOM: All proposals aimed at strengthening Ukraine's security after the end of the Russo-Ukrainian war must be formulated in clear formats with specific guarantees and forms of assistance from allies. This was stated by the spokesman of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, Serhiy Bratchuk.

"The most important thing is that such proposals do not remain declarations or memorandums of dubious nature, like the Budapest Memorandum. We need not just formulas on paper, but real instruments that will actually work and ensure our security. In any case, all such initiatives are considered to discuss them and reach specific agreements — whether with Kazakhstan separately, or with NATO or with the United States. Any proposals must be discussed and find practical implementation," emphasized Bratchuk.

Currently, options for the participation of military allies of Ukraine in a peacekeeping contingent are being discussed.

"Formats and possible solutions are being discussed: it may be patrolling Ukrainian airspace by the ally's aviation or the establishment of military bases on the territory of Ukraine. But the question arises — under what flag will they be? Obviously, not under the NATO flag. It is important to determine who will guard such bases, what functions foreign contingents will receive and how realistically they will guarantee security," Bratchuk said.

Unfortunately, practice shows: many global formats of guarantees, including peacekeeping missions, do not work properly. Ukraine demands real guarantees as there remains an aggressive state — Russia.

"It is obvious that the modern Russian regime, as well as its possible successors, will remain aggressive. Therefore, the discussion should not only be about guarantees for Ukraine but also about the prospects for Russia to evolve into a different, non-aggressive state in the future," commented the spokesman of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army.

The main guarantor of Ukraine's security and independence is a strong Ukrainian army. Here, specific, clearly defined decisions are also needed to support the Armed Forces.

"When talking about a strong Ukrainian army, it is clear that allies will help. This year, Ukraine has already received over $30 billion in aid, and next year this amount will likely increase. Additionally, it is essential to remember that a strong army means new equipment, a sufficient number of trained fighters, and the development of the military-industrial complex. Support for these components from allies is concrete guarantees and real security instruments," explained Bratchuk.

Currently, the so-called 'NATO-light' option is being discussed — an adapted form of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Alliance.

"In fact, it is about ensuring that in the event of Russian aggression, the allies gather within a day and decide how to help Ukraine. However, we have already gone through such a mechanism. It would be more appropriate for the allies to discuss not only assistance to Ukraine but also how the Ukrainian army can support them in the event of Russian aggression. Allies must understand: guarantees are needed not only for Ukraine but for Europe as a whole. Even those countries that seem distant from the Russian threat could come under attack, given the current technologies of warfare," said a Ukrainian soldier.

"As a citizen and a military person, I would like political agreements to turn into concrete projects and instruments. The time for discussions has passed. It is time for concrete actions and decisions. The outcome of all negotiations must be instruments that truly guarantee security," added Serhiy Bratchuk.
