Funding the Army: Marchenko spoke about tax changes in 2025.
Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko claims that increasing taxes in 2024 is a necessary step to ensure funding for the security and defense sector. He stated that the government does not intend to introduce new tax changes in 2025. The minister noted that currently, 26% of the country's GDP is used for defense spending, and increasing taxes has become necessary to maintain financial stability. The main source of funding for the defense sector remains taxes, as domestic borrowing has its limitations.
This is a compromise solution that only partially satisfies me. The key task is to strike a balance between the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and our financial capabilities, - said Marchenko.
Marchenko believes that businesses and citizens understand the importance of raising taxes for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He emphasized that this is not an unbearable burden, as every hryvnia will be directed towards funding the army. Regarding tax policy for 2025, the minister noted that no new tax increases are planned, as this is a painful issue for businesses and citizens. As an alternative source of funding for defense, he suggests using frozen Russian assets to purchase weapons if necessary.
