Zelensky on the US idea: a free economic zone in occupied territories.
According to ТСН: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the US initiative to create a free economic zone in the occupied territories in the event of a possible ceasefire with Russia. He noted that the proposed format is complex, but can be considered fair and requires serious internal discussion.
“The format is complex, but fair,” the president emphasized.
Where an economic zone could be created
Zelensky noted that such a zone could appear in certain areas of Donbas. The implementation of this scenario would require mutual steps from both Ukraine and Russia, particularly the withdrawal of troops to a safe distance.
The president emphasized that this format would force Russia to “copy” Ukraine's actions rather than dictate its terms.
Zelensky also outlined an alternative option that is being discussed at the international level. It envisages a cessation of hostilities without troop withdrawal, which means the fixation of forces at current positions, and all disputed issues must be resolved exclusively through diplomatic means.
“It’s about freezing the frontline, not about conflict,” the head of state explained, adding that such a scenario would be easier for Ukraine's international partners to monitor.
The president stressed that regardless of formats and scenarios, Ukraine does not recognize the occupied territories as Russian. According to him, the actions of the Kremlin indicate Russia’s unwillingness to engage in real diplomacy; however, Ukraine hopes to restore its sovereignty over all its lands in the future.
Zelensky emphasized that any international initiatives will be considered solely in light of national interests and without any concessions regarding the territorial integrity of the state.
Let us recall that earlier President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the stubbornness of the Kremlin in negotiations.
These statements by the president underline the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The formats and initiatives being discussed could prove decisive in determining the path to peace; however, Ukraine remains steadfast in its position regarding territorial integrity.
It is important that international support and dialogue remain key aspects for restoring peace in the region. Ukraine will have to maintain a balance between achieving compromises and protecting its national interests.
