British woman sentenced to life in prison in Dubai: what happened

According to The Sun: The GoFundMe page for Mia O'Brien, a British woman sentenced to life in Dubai, has been removed due to violations of rules.

23-year-old Mia from Huyton in Liverpool is currently in Dubai's central prison. According to her family, she has become a victim of a "very foolish mistake."

The family, who have not seen Mia since October, did not disclose the details of her crime.

Her "shocked" mother reached out for help in fundraising, but the campaign was suddenly removed due to community violations.

A GoFundMe representative told The Sun: "The page was removed for violating section 9 of our Terms of Service regarding Prohibited Activities."

Additional information

"Section 9 prohibits fundraising for legal assistance in cases of certain crimes," he added.

Daniel McKenna, Mia's mother, 46, wrote on the now-removed page: "Mia has been sentenced to life in Dubai and she is now in central prison."

She continued: "As a mother, I am utterly devastated. I haven't seen my daughter since last October. Mia is only 23 years old and has never had any trouble with the law."

"She was studying to be a lawyer, but unfortunately, she fell into the wrong crowd and made a mistake she is now paying for."

Daniel urged anyone who can to support the family, even with small amounts, explaining that the funds raised would go towards legal costs and trips to visit Mia.

The fundraising campaign aimed to raise £1,600 and had gathered about £700 before its cancellation.

Discussing her daughter's state, Daniel shared with the Daily Mail: "She is struggling with this very hard. She was recently transferred to another prison, and it was a huge shock for her."

A life sentence in the United Arab Emirates typically means 15 to 25 years of imprisonment. Although the reasons for Mia's sentencing are not disclosed, the UAE often imposes life sentences for serious crimes such as drug trafficking, murder, or terrorism.

The FCO travel service warns tourists: "We have a zero tolerance policy towards drug-related crimes. Penalties can include life imprisonment or even the death penalty."

A FCO representative confirmed that they are supporting Mia's family and are in contact with local authorities in the UAE.
