Harris agrees to muted microphone rule in debates with Trump.
Kamala Harris agrees to the rules of future debates with Donald Trump
US Vice President Kamala Harris has agreed to the rules of future televised debates against her opponent Donald Trump, including muting microphones when it is the opponent's turn to speak.
Earlier in Harris' campaign headquarters, there was protest against the microphone muting rule, which was supported by her predecessor in the presidential race, Joe Biden.
But on Wednesday, both Harris' campaign and Trump's campaign accepted the debate rules proposed by ABC News.
In a letter to ABC on Wednesday, Harris' campaign said that, as before, she believes that the debate format will be “fundamentally disadvantageous,” as it “will serve to protect Donald Trump from direct exchanges of views with the Vice President.”
At the same Time, in Harris' headquarters they added that they are accepting the rules to ensure that the debates will still take place.
“We understand that Donald Trump is even in danger of not participating in the debates, as he threatened to do earlier if we do not agree to his desired format. For this reason, we accept the full set of rules proposed by ABC, including the muted microphone,” the statement said.
The statement of Trump's campaign says that they are “very happy” that Kamala Harris and her team “have accepted the already agreed rules.”
The rules of the debates between Trump and Harris will be similar to those of the June debates between Biden and Trump, organized by CNN.
In particular, the candidates' debates will not involve an audience and will last 90 minutes with two commercial breaks, and microphones will only be on for the candidate whose turn it is to speak. Only moderators will be allowed to ask questions.
