Google Maps shows the scale of destruction in Mariupol: new satellite images.
Google Maps documented the destruction in Mariupol
According to inkorr.com: Google Maps service has presented new satellite images of Mariupol, which is currently under temporary occupation. These images show the scale of destruction that has occurred since the beginning of the war in eastern Ukraine. The 'Glavkom' portal reported this.
The updated maps show significant damage to various objects, including residential high-rises.
These images help document the consequences of the war: for international organizations, lawyers, humanitarian missions – the scale of destruction, the sizes of destroyed neighborhoods, and damage to infrastructure are visible.
The satellite images presented serve as evidence that can be used for reports by human rights defenders and journalists. Now these images are available to Google Maps users, allowing a detailed examination of the destruction in the city.
It should be noted that Russian occupiers have destroyed all Ukrainian murals, monuments, and pedestals in Mariupol, as reported by the city council.
'Instead, the city is filled with murals featuring Russian tricolor flags, propaganda of 'friendship with Russian cities', murders of peaceful Mariupol residents portrayed as 'heroes of the special military operation'. The city is being forcibly Russified, and historical events are deliberately distorted,' emphasized the city council.
For instance, the director of 'Mariupol Television' Mykola Osichenko noted that the occupiers renamed Azovstal Street to Tula Boulevard and erected a monument to gingerbread and samovar at that location.
Thus, the new satellite images from Google Maps demonstrate significant destruction and highlight attempts at Russian propaganda and Russification of Mariupol amid the war.
This data plays an important role in the international coverage of the situation in Ukraine, allowing the world not only to see the scale of destruction but also to understand the consequences endured by the city and its residents. Observing such evidence, one can gain a better understanding of how serious the situation in Mariupol is and why it is essential to continue supporting efforts to restore the city and its culture.
