Greece Opposes Fresh Restrictions on Gas Transfers

According to Espreso.tv: Athens is pushing back against proposed limits on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, warning that such measures could damage its shipping sector. The issue came to a head with the unveiling of the European Commission’s 21st sanctions package on June 9, which introduces new energy and financial curbs. Greek officials have voiced alarm over the potential impact on national interests.

On July 16, Greece formally vetoed the package, citing harmful consequences for its economy. Among the companies at risk is Dynagas, which operates 27 gas carriers, including specialized Arc7 ice-class tankers crucial for energy transport in icy waters. These vessels highlight Greece’s strategic role in global LNG logistics.

EU’s Internal Dilemma Deepens

During the sanctions debate, Bulgaria’s foreign minister remarked:

“This allowed the country to support the package.”

“You cannot simultaneously profit from Russia and demand peace.”
