Sharp Increase in Buckwheat Prices Across Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: Over the past year, the price of buckwheat groats in Ukraine has jumped by 28%, surpassing 50 hryvnia per kilogram as of February 2026. This upward trend began in April 2024, when the price was 26.36 UAH per kg, and has continued steadily in the months since. Buckwheat is a staple food in Ukraine, making its price a significant indicator of food affordability for many households.

Detailed Price Trajectory

The price climbed to 35.19 UAH per kg by December 2024. By December 2025, it had risen further to 44.88 UAH per kg, marking an annual increase of 27.5%. At the start of 2026, the January price reached 47.48 UAH per kg, and by February 2026, it exceeded the 50-hryvnia mark, hitting 50.82 UAH per kg.

Retail prices show considerable variation; at the Auchan supermarket chain, the lowest price found is 42.90 UAH per kg, while at Megamarket, it can be as high as 64.60 UAH per kg. This price surge for a key commodity comes amid broader inflationary pressures, with Ukraine's consumer prices rising 0.7% in January 2026 and 7.4% year-on-year.

Consequently, the cost of buckwheat continues its persistent climb, generating concern among consumers and market analysts alike.

Analysts suggest this inflationary trend for buckwheat may be driven by a combination of factors, including general inflation, shifts in agricultural production, and sustained demand for staple food items.

Given its central role in the national diet, the rising cost of buckwheat is likely to strain household budgets, particularly within a context of overall price increases. Experts warn that continued inflation for essential foodstuffs could pose a serious challenge to the country's economy and the financial well-being of its citizens.
