The police arrested a 60-year-old man after one person was injured and another 16 were hurt.

Authorities stated that during the incident, 'there could have been between 50 and 100 shots'.

Acting Superintendent Steven Perry noted that the shots were 'fired blindly at passing vehicles.'

“He was shooting... from the premises, through the window.”
“That is what we are certain of.”

A large police operation concluded just after midnight on Monday when the suspect was arrested.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King described the shooting as 'horrific' and 'almost unprecedented in Sydney'.

He also mentioned that the police do not know the motive of the shooter.

“It is a high-caliber rifle that he used for this incident,”

he said.

“Very, very concerning. This is part of an investigation that will begin today.”

Assistant Commissioner King added that the shooter also fired at police when they arrived at the scene.

He noted that the police would contact the suspect “in due course” to clarify the circumstances of how he obtained the firearm.

Investigation is ongoing.

The man, who has not yet been charged, was taken to the hospital under police guard due to injuries sustained during the arrest. After the shooting, one person sought treatment at Canterbury Hospital for gunshot wounds.

After examination, he was transferred to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in critical condition.

Another 16 people sustained minor injuries, with medics providing assistance on-site, and two were hospitalized at Canterbury Hospital.

Several vehicles, including two police cars, were damaged by gunfire during this 'active shooter incident'.

Authorities noted that they heard shouts of 'put your hands up' and 'lie down!' during the arrest of the shooting suspect.

The suspect was spotted on the restaurant roof, from where he reportedly fired four shots onto the street.

Two hours later, the police surrounded an apartment above the business on Georges River Rd, where they seized several firearms and arrested the suspect.

Witnesses recalled hearing gunfire around 9:00 PM, followed by further hits, ABC reports.

The area remains quarantined, and residents are urged to stay indoors.

The police also warned drivers to seek alternative routes as roads remain closed.

The New South Wales Police Department stated: “A police operation is ongoing in Croydon Park after shots were fired.”

“The area is blocked, and roads are closed between Croydon Avenue and Seymor Street on Georges River Road, as well as Brighton Avenue which is closed between Georges River Road and Queensborough Road.”

“Specialized units are responding to the scene, and the public is urged to stay indoors, while drivers are advised to avoid this area.”
