In the viral video, the clever terrier helped the police officer find his leash during a fire call.
The police and firefighters arrived on the report of a fire on September 11, when the flames were already visible from the building.
Since it was unknown whether anyone was inside, detectives Michael Eli and Jacob Leonard began to check the premises by cutting an entrance.
Footage from the camera shows the dog, left home alone, appearing in the smoke.
In a touching moment, Oakley met his rescuer and led him to his leash.
After that, he calmly sat and waited for the officer to put the leash on him before exiting the house.
Police Chief Matt Thomas commented that he 'was proud of how his staff handled the situation.'
“The quick response really mattered, and it's always nice when we can return a family member – even a four-legged one – safely to their loved ones,” he said.
Oakley's family, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that they rescued him from a local organization 'Players for Pits' when he was still a puppy.
“He is an athletic dog who loves to play and wrestle,” they added.
“He loves to cuddle with us, snores loudly while sleeping, basks in the sun, and eats peanut butter.”
“We are forever grateful to Mike from the Aurora Police Department for saving our sweet dog.”
No one was injured during the fire. Investigators believe the fire started in the attic but noted that it is not suspicious.
Oakley and his owners were advised to stay in alternative housing for emergencies for a while.
Subsequently, Oakley received the title of certified good boy on the popular online platform WeRateDogs.
In an Instagram post that received 451,880 likes, the page noted: “This is Oakley. Last Thursday, he was home alone when a fire broke out in the attic.”
“Officially before Eli [the officer] could grab Oakley, the puppy urgently led the officer through the smoky house right to where his leash was hanging,” the post reported.
“14/10 for everything,” Oakley received a high score.
