Heavy rains lead to fatal floods in Bali

According to The Sun: Heavy rains in Bali have caused horrific floods and led to the deaths of at least six people. Water has flooded some of the island's most popular tourist spots as monsoon rains continue.

At least two buildings were swept away by the floods Social media captured the moment when a house collapsed

The flooding began on Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday, during which two buildings collapsed in the island's capital, Denpasar. Four people died as a result, and several major roads remain blocked.

Videos posted on social media show cars floating down streets and rivers overflowing. People are trying to cross flooded streets where the water reaches chest level in some areas.

Two people died in Jembrana, located in western Bali. According to Abdul Muhari from the National Disaster Management Agency, another 85 people were evacuated on Wednesday.

Impact of the weather conditions in Bali and neighboring islands

Denpasar remains the hardest-hit area, with significant road blockages. Four regions of the island have experienced considerable impacts from the weather. Access to the international airport near Denpasar is still limited – trucks are the only vehicles that can move safely.

“About 200 rescuers have been dispatched to assist,” said Nyoman Sidakarya, head of the Bali rescue service.

To the east, the island of East Nusa Tenggara has also been affected by heavy rains, cutting off 18 villages and leading to the deaths of four people, according to the Indonesian disaster agency.

Muhari added that many villages have lost telephone connections. The head of the agency, Sukaranto, reported that four more people are missing in East Nusa Tenggara.

Extreme weather conditions are not unusual during the annual monsoon season, which runs from November to April, and can cause landslides, flash floods, and the spread of waterborne diseases.

Journalists are also reporting events in Karangasem, where heavy rains have caused landslides that blocked access to several areas.

The Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a warning about extreme weather conditions ahead of the rains, warning of possible downpours, thunderstorms, and strong winds. “The heavy rainfall was caused by active atmospheric waves known as Rossby waves,” said a BMKG representative.

BMKG also forecasts that the rains will ease by Wednesday afternoon. On social media, an Australian noted that this was the “biggest storm” in ten years of being in Bali, describing the strong thunder.

He added: “The rain hasn’t stopped for two days, and in the evening I woke up from the thunder and even felt my doors shaking.”

It should be noted that Bali, popular among tourists in winter, often suffers from extreme weather conditions during the monsoon season. In light of current events, local authorities continue to organize rescue operations and support for those affected, trying to ensure maximum safety for residents and tourists.

After the heavy rains, residents are trying to return to their daily lives, clearing the aftermath of the floods. However, according to meteorologists, new downpours are possible in the coming days, which could further complicate the situation.
