HRT for women in the UK will cost £20 a year: what will change.
According to The Sun: Beginning in April, women will pay less than £20 a year for menopause hormone therapy (HRT) under new prescription rules. Patients will be able to purchase an annual subscription for HRT for £18.70, which will benefit around 400,000 women and save them hundreds of pounds a year on prescriptions.
“The reduction in the cost of HRT will have a significant impact on the lives of so many women. This prepaid certificate is a significant step towards prioritizing the health and well-being of women.”
Women will be able to obtain the certificate online or at a pharmacy. A one-time payment grants access to unlimited prescriptions for HRT issued by their doctor.
Call for Further Changes
Last year, a campaign was launched to improve access to HRT, resulting in the first medications being available without a prescription. Activists continue to urge ministers to make prescriptions free of charge.
“This is great news for women, but if the government really wanted to tackle health inequalities, it would abolish the prescription fee altogether.”
Our excellent campaign on menopause issues has also called for better support for women going through menopause at work. Ministers have been urged to improve conditions for women experiencing ‘the change’ by appointing an HRT coordinator and publishing a Women’s Health Strategy as stocks of essential medicines run low in pharmacies nationwide.
Government Response
Minister for Women’s Health Maria Caulfield expressed pride at the announcement of the reduction in HRT costs, stating that this is a significant step in improving women’s health in the country. The Women’s Health Strategy has made menopause one of its main priorities, aiming to fulfill its commitment to women by facilitating access to HRT.
From early April, women will be able to access menopause hormone therapy at a significantly lower price, which will be a great relief for thousands of patients. However, activists continue to urge the government to make prescriptions for HRT completely free, emphasizing the need to ease conditions for women requiring support during menopause.
