A painting created by AI mysteriously appeared in a British museum: staff reaction.
Event at the National Museum Cardiff
According to Korrespondent.net: At the National Museum Cardiff in the UK, an interesting situation occurred: an artist with the pseudonym Elias Merrow secretly hung a painting created by artificial intelligence on the wall. It went unnoticed by the museum staff for several hours, as reported by BBC.
This work titled Empty Plate depicted a boy in a school uniform holding a plate. According to the author, the painting was created with the help of artificial intelligence based on a previous sketch. Merrow claims that 'a few hundred people' managed to see the work before it was taken down from the exhibition.
One of the visitors noticed the unusual image and asked the museum staff about its origin. In response, they admitted that they 'had no idea when and how it appeared there.' A representative of the museum association of Wales confirmed this incident, stating that 'the item was placed without permission and has already been removed.'
Merrow explained that his action was an 'experiment with the art selection system' that questions how public institutions determine what is worth exhibiting and what is not.
He also added that using artificial intelligence is a 'natural evolution of artistic tools' and emphasized: 'AI is already here, and restricting its capabilities contradicts my beliefs about artistic freedom.'
Similar 'guerrilla' projects by Merrow have taken place before, including at the Bristol Museum and Tate Modern.
