Steven Gerrard on England's failure: We were selfish losers.
The scandal of England's 'Golden Generation'
According to The Sun: Steven Gerrard commented on the failures of England's 'Golden Generation', blaming it for 'selfishness' and competition among clubs.
“I think we were all selfish losers.”
In a candid conversation with Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard noted that the national team never became a true team due to 'immature hatred' towards players from other clubs.
The Liverpool legend speaks with Rio Ferdinand during his podcast.Gerrard also mentioned how often he felt unhappy in the national team, where he played 114 matches, 38 of them as captain.
“I didn’t like it. I hated the hotel rooms.”
But he loved playing for his country: “I was really proud. I enjoyed the training, but it was only 90 minutes a day.”
Ferdinand agreed with Gerrard's sentiment regarding the 'hidden resentment' between Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea players. Gerrard added that this hatred was 'a bit immature.'
“But if we had connected more from the start, spent more time together, the results could have been better.”
Gerrard is confident that managers and coaching staff should have found a way to harmoniously combine him, Frank Lampard, and Paul Scholes in one team.
“Why has no one been able to make us play together for 15 years?”
He emphasized that all three have immense talent, but they lacked the ability to work in one team. Gerrard believes that tactical preparation and courage from the coaches were needed for success.
Expressing his opinion, Gerrard mentioned that England's 'Golden Generation' could have achieved more had the rivalry between clubs not gotten in the way. His words once again underline the importance of teamwork and unity in the national squad, which unfortunately did not come to fruition at that time. These lessons could be valuable for future generations of footballers striving for success on the international stage.
