EU launches biometric control at borders: what awaits Ukrainian travelers.
According to The Sun: Preparing for a trip to Europe?
Your journey has just become a bit more complicated.
suppliedSofiya Svietochovska tests the new system. As of October 12, British travelers are required to scan their fingerprints and take photos at European borders due to the introduction of a new entry and exit system (Entry/Exit System) in the EU.
Jacob Lewis explains what changes await your vacation.
WHAT CHANGES ARE HAPPENING?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will track your trips to and from European countries and will replace the traditional passport stamps.
The next step will be the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), similar to the American ESTA, which will launch in late 2026 and will cost £17.
WHICH COUNTRIES WILL BE AFFECTED?
The changes will affect 29 European countries in the Schengen Area, including Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Germany.
Travel to Ireland will remain unchanged.
WHEN WILL THE CHANGES START?
The EES system will launch on October 12, but implementation will occur in phases over six months to avoid overcrowding.
Initially, the new system will operate in Dover for bus passengers, and from November 1 for other travelers.
Eurostar will test the system on business passengers, while Eurotunnel will first launch it for buses and trucks.
By April 10, 2026, the system is expected to be operational at all crossings.
WHAT SHOULD I DO AT THE BORDER?
Now, when you travel, you will need to register at a special device, a kiosk.
Scan your passport, after which the kiosk will take your fingerprints and photo.
Children under 12 are not required to provide fingerprints.
You will also need to answer four simple questions about your trip, such as your place of residence and financial sufficiency.
Your information will be stored for three years, so on your subsequent trips, you will only need a quick facial scan.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?
Officials claim that confirmation will take about two to three minutes per person. However, if you are traveling with family or are not used to automated systems, the process may take longer.

This has raised considerable concern, especially in Dover, where space is limited. However, the phased implementation is expected to help avoid excessive queues.
Ports and stations may temporarily suspend the system if queues become too large.
Eurotunnel has installed over 200 kiosks in Folkestone, and Eurostar has 49 at St. Pancras.
Dover has even expanded its area to reduce pressure on processing.
WHAT ABOUT ETIAS?
ETIAS will launch in late 2026, around October. When this happens, you will need to apply online before your trip and pay £17 for a permit valid for three years.
When applying, you will be asked several security questions. Most applications will be processed within a few minutes, though some may take up to 30 days for additional checks.
Upon the launch of ETIAS, a six-month transition period will be provided, but it’s better to get it as early as possible to avoid inconveniences when boarding your flight.

WHO HAS TO PAY FOR ETIAS?
Everyone needs to obtain the ETIAS authorization, but only those aged 18 to 70 have to pay. Children under 18 and individuals over 70 receive it for free, but must also apply.
WHAT IF I HAVE A CRIMINAL PAST?
Minor offenses should not be an obstacle, but any criminal convictions in the last ten years (20 years for terrorist offenses) must be declared. Serious crimes can lead to denial, but most individuals with criminal records will still obtain approval.
DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?
France requires medical insurance, although other countries do not. It is always advisable to have a policy, but French border officials may ask you to show proof.

DO I NEED TO ARRIVE EARLIER?
Transport companies assure that there is no need. Eurostar asks passengers to arrive 75 minutes before departure, while Eurotunnel recommends sticking to normal arrival times.
They state that they have conducted detailed planning to adapt to the changes.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT AIRPORTS?
If you are traveling by plane, the EES process will take place after landing. It will remain the same as during departure.
WILL MY PASSPORT BE STAMPED?
During the implementation period until April 2026 — yes. You will go through digital registration but will also receive a traditional stamp. After April 2026, stamping is expected to cease.
WHAT IS THE POINT OF ALL THIS?
The EU claims that this system will enhance security, prevent criminals from using fake identities, and monitor that people do not exceed the 90-day tourist limit. Since most travelers will be registered, this should speed up border crossing compared to manual passport checks.
