Russia and India Reach Deal to Resume Direct LNG Shipments.
India-Russia Negotiations Underway
According to TSN.ua: India and Russia are in talks to restart direct deliveries of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). Notably, India has not purchased Russian LNG since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. However, along with China, India has emerged as a key buyer of Russian energy resources, absorbing roughly 80% of its exports.
Energy Market Ripple Effects
These discussions come amid significant shifts in the energy landscape. Oil prices have surged from $70 to over $100 per barrel, bolstering Russia’s economy. Russia’s oil and gas budget revenues are projected to climb 70% in April compared to March, reaching 0.9 trillion rubles—the highest monthly level since October 2025.
On March 18, Iran reported that the U.S. and Israel had struck the South Pars gas field. This development could reverberate across global energy markets and influence the ongoing India-Russia talks.
The negotiations highlight a strategic pivot in the energy policies of both nations, especially amid global economic and political turbulence. Restoring Russian gas flows could deepen bilateral economic ties and strengthen India’s energy security. At the same time, the situation in Iran signals potential risks for the global energy market, warranting close monitoring of future events.
