How Iran’s Strategic Position Outweighs the United States

According to Espreso.tv: According to Ihor Semivolos, Executive Director of the Center for Middle East Studies, Iran currently possesses a strategic advantage in its standoff with the United States. He attributes this edge to fundamental differences in the two countries’ strategic approaches, as well as the role of timing. The U.S. and Iran are currently engaged in indirect negotiations in Doha, Qatar, with the primary topics being Tehran’s nuclear program and the potential easing of American sanctions.

The previous round of talks concluded on June 17 with the signing of a memorandum. American negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held productive discussions in Qatar, signaling active diplomatic engagement between the two nations. However, Semivolos warns that Iran may deploy various pressure tactics—most notably by leveraging the issue of the Strait of Hormuz. This suggests that Tehran retains the ability to disrupt critical economic arteries in the region.

The Role of Iran’s Strategic Culture

Semivolos further noted that in this context, Iran’s strategic culture provides it with certain advantages that could shape the outcome of the negotiations.

“In other words, the Americans have every capability to escalate the situation,” he emphasized.
This underscores how easily tensions could flare between the two countries. As a result, the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and related sanctions remains delicate and warrants close monitoring.

With escalating regional tensions and the strategic interests of both nations at play, the U.S.-Iran talks could prove pivotal for stability across the Middle East. The outcome of these discussions may have far-reaching consequences—not only for bilateral ties but also for global security and the world economy, particularly given the potential impact on international energy markets.
