Funds Redirected to Boost Security and Defense Sector

According to Novyny.live: On June 23, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers decided to redirect 220 million hryvnias to bolster the country's security and defense sector. This funding is earmarked for weaponry, training, and intelligence operations—key components in maintaining national security. The move comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities in the face of persistent threats.

Breakdown of the Allocation

How the money will be distributed: Out of the 220 million hryvnias, 100 million will go to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the National Guard. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense will receive 70 million hryvnias, designated for the development, procurement, modernization, and repair of weapon systems. Additionally, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense gets 50 million hryvnias to fund its intelligence activities.

As of May 1, 2026, any unused funds accumulated from energy and utility companies may be repurposed in line with the 2026 state budget law. Under this legislation, the Cabinet has the authority to allocate leftover funds to defense. A critical step in this process was an extraordinary session of the Verkhovna Rada held on June 18.

This financial reallocation marks a significant move to enhance Ukraine's defense readiness amid current challenges.

The redistribution underscores the government's growing focus on security sector needs, especially relevant as threats escalate. Channeling extra resources to the National Guard, Defense Ministry, and intelligence services highlights defense spending as a top priority in Ukraine's budget policy, which could shape the country's overall security landscape.
