Ukrainian Security Service Chief Detained for 60 Days in $320,000 Bribery Case.
Corruption Charges Against SBU Official
According to TSN.ua: The head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Zhytomyr region, Volodymyr Kompanichenko, has been ordered to be held in pre-trial detention for 60 days. The High Anti-Corruption Court announced this decision on February 27. Kompanichenko is suspected of corruption crimes related to the construction of shelters for military aircraft. As an alternative to detention, he may post bail of over 6.9 million hryvnias.
Kompanichenko is accused of accepting a bribe of $320,000. This case has drawn significant attention as it involves the SBU, Ukraine's main security agency, and its leadership. The commander of logistics for the Ukrainian Air Force is also a suspect in the same case. This arrest is part of a broader, ongoing effort to root out corruption within Ukraine's security institutions during the war.
Presidential Response and Anti-Corruption Drive
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously emphasized the need to cleanse the SBU, underscoring the critical importance of fighting corruption in all state bodies. This case forms part of a wider national anti-corruption campaign aimed at restoring public trust in law enforcement agencies.
