New EU Status for Ukraine by 2028: What Friedrich Merz Has Proposed.
Friedrich Merz Voices Strong Support for Ukraine
According to Espreso.tv: During a speech in the Bundestag, Friedrich Merz expressed his backing for Ukraine, highlighting its crucial role in defending freedom across Europe. He noted that Ukraine has been protecting its sovereignty for over four years, a struggle he described as vital for the security of the entire continent. Merz emphasized that Ukraine is fighting not only for its own rights but for the freedom and safety of all Europe, stating:
“Ukraine is defending not just its own freedom, but our freedom as well. It is safeguarding freedom and security throughout Europe.”
EU Integration and Negotiation Timeline
Merz also addressed Ukraine’s path toward European integration in his remarks. On April 27, 2026, he indicated that Ukraine cannot join the European Union before January 1, 2028. He suggested that Kyiv may need to acknowledge the loss of some territories to achieve this status. However, on May 21, 2026, Merz plans to offer Ukraine a new special status as an 'associate member' of the European Union, serving as an interim step before full membership.
Furthermore, on June 2, 2026, he stressed that launching accession negotiations with Ukraine is a top priority for Europe. His statements underscore the importance of supporting Ukraine in its EU aspirations and its fight for freedom, which carries significance for the entire European continent.
Friedrich Merz’s address in the Bundestag reflects the growing political momentum behind Ukraine amid its struggle for freedom and EU integration. His position, which frames the Ukrainian issue as central to European security, highlights the need for continued collaboration between Kyiv and Brussels. Ukraine’s battle for its territories and independence remains a key topic in political dialogue, one that could shape future decisions on European integration and regional stability.
