According to ITC.ua — Техно: China is building the world’s first 500 MW impulse hydropower plant in Xizang. The spherical inlet valve for Unit 1 at the Datang Zhala station recently passed a hydrostatic test. This project is the first approved megawatt-scale hydropower initiative in the region, highlighting its strategic importance for both the area and China’s energy sector.
Technical Specs and Project Benefits
The spherical inlet valve used in this project boasts impressive specifications. It measures 2.9 meters in diameter and is designed to operate under a pressure of 9 MPa. When fully assembled, the valve housing weighs over 300 tons, underscoring its durability and strength. The Datang Zhala station will feature two impulse hydropower units, each with a capacity of 500 MW. These units are engineered for high-head, high-altitude operation, ensuring efficient power generation.
Furthermore, the Datang Zhala project is included in the first batch of major technical equipment supply initiatives approved by China’s National Energy Administration. This development marks a significant milestone for hydropower in the country and could serve as a model for future investments in renewable energy.
